Post Nasal
Drip
Post nasal drip can be a problem for many people – even those
with good oral hygiene.
There is a test which you can do. Stick out your tongue and lick an
un perfumed wrist. Wait five seconds, and take a sniff. Almost everyone's
tongue has an odour. In many people with bad breath, a careful scraping
of the back of the tongue with a small spoon can reveal a yellowish
mucous material. The odour on this spoon is very reminiscent of the
odour of the whole of the mouth.
As before, regular cleansing of the tongue with a brush or tongue
scraper certainly helps. Additionally, great benefit can be obtained
from the use of a mouthwash which should be swished around the mouth
and gargled for a minute or so. Good products to use here are Retardex
and Dentyl mouthwashes which are readily obtained from chemists and
supermarkets.
Strangely, the breath may be fine during breathing, but only may become
a problem during speech when the tongue is active.
Importantly- Don’t Worry!
The problem you may think you have
may not have been noticed by anyone else.
Other conditions causing bad
breath:
The presence of a foreign body
in the nose or sinuses
Lung throat and sinus infections/problems
Uncontrolled diabetes
Liver and kidney problems.
All of which are rare and would need to
be diagnosed by your medical GP.
